Transportation Permit

A transportation permit, also known as an oversized load permit, and hereinafter referred to as "Permit", shall be required of all drivers within the city of Turlock who travel within the city limits in a vehicle, or with a load, that exceeds the maximum height (14'), width (8'-6"), or length (40' or 65' combined) requirements specified in the California Vehicle Code (CVC). These maximum limits notwithstanding, certain CVC exemptions may allow for extended limits, such as a maximum width of 10' for special mobile equipment, special construction or highway maintenance equipment, or motor vehicles designed to haul feed for livestock (CVC 35104).

The City is empowered, but not required, to issue a Permit to allow for the movement of these vehicles or loads, as well as to place reasonable restrictions on their movement, such as routes and times of day when the movements may occur. This oversight is important to ensure that drivers are aware of construction and detours along their proposed route, to ensure adherence to truck routes whenever possible, and to maintain awareness of when and where these movements will occur in the interests of public safety.

Obtaining a Permit

Applicants shall use the most current, City of Turlock Transportation Permit Form, which is available as a fillable PDF form by clicking the link at the bottom of this page. This application form is a modified version of the State of California's form, developed in accordance with CVC 35781. Completed applications should be submitted to the Engineering Division via fax at (209) 668-5563. The City shall make every effort to promptly review and respond to these requests, though due to limited staffing responses may take up to (48) hours. Upon review and approval of the application the approved Permit, bearing the signature of an authorized City agent, will be returned via fax. The applicant is expected to submit payment to the City immediately upon receipt of the approved Permit.

A Permit shall be valid for up to (7) days; though a narrower window will also be allowed. The applicant should identify the requested start and end dates on the application. If no dates are specified, the City may provide a (7) day window starting from the date the application is approved. A Permit is valid for one-trip only; an annual permit is not currently available.

Fees & Payments

The cost for a Permit is $16. The applicant is expected to submit payment to the City immediately upon receipt of a Permit. Payment may be submitted in-person at the City of Turlock's Finance Division during normal business hours or by sending a check payable to "City of Turlock" via mail to: City of Turlock, Finance Division, 156 S. Broadway, Ste. 114, Turlock, CA, 95380. All payments shall indicate the permit number(s) to which the payment applies. A single payment may be made for multiple permits.

Applicants who fail to promptly pay for their Permit may be moved to a "pre-payment required" status, which would require them to pre-pay for any future Permit prior to issuance. This status shall remain in effect until the Finance Division has received payment in full for all outstanding permits.

Status

Questions regarding the status of a Permit application, specific questions regarding permit requirements, or law enforcement related inquiries can be directed to the City of Turlock's Transportation Permit Office.
