Volunteers Make a Difference!
Turlock Police Department’s Volunteer Program began in October 2000. The program started out as volunteers in patrol and has gradually branched out to numerous other areas of the department. Volunteers have proudly logged over 50,000 hours to date. Our program is affiliated with the
National Volunteers In Police Service (V.I.P.S.). We join 38,000 volunteers within 700 law enforcement agencies as members of V.I.P.S.
Turlock Police Volunteers are the heart of crime prevention. Volunteers provide “extra eyes and ears” on patrol and helping hands at the police station. Some of the duties currently being performed by volunteers include:
- patrolling neighborhoods and shopping centers
- assisting in Property and Evidence
- patrolling the area of schools
- performing clerical assignments
- data entry
- making deliveries and distributing mail
- assisting at special events
- distributing important flyers
- assist Neighborhood Watch coordinators
- vacation house checks
- assist in searching for missing persons
Volunteer Training Program
To provide adequate knowledge for safety and effective service, all volunteers participate in a training academy. The volunteer academy is broken down into three phases:
Phase I - Designed for volunteers interested in working in an office setting assisting specialized units of Turlock Police. Volunteers maintain the departments stolen vehicle log, assist the communications division with data entry, and assist the detectives division with property crime follow up.
Phase II - Specialized training for volunteers who wish to work special events providing traffic control and assisting officers. Turlock volunteers assist at such events as, Stanislaus County Fair, Kat Country Listener Appreciation Concert, the Model A Swap Meet and numerous other excited events held in Turlock throughout the year.
Phase III - Training for volunteers wishing to provide service through patrol functions. Volunteers on patrol provide extra patrol in designated areas, Holiday Patrol for businesses, and provide vacation house checks.
Volunteers are given the option of how far they want to go through the academy. If a volunteer only wants to work in the police station, they are given the option to graduate after Phase I and begin work. Or volunteers can complete the entire academy and volunteer in any aspect available to them.
After completion of the Volunteer Academy, graduates will be given the opportunity to take part in field training. This is a hands-on in depth training that puts the academy training into practical application on the streets or in the office.
2080 Club
Given the standard that 2,080 hours is considered an individual work year, VIPS are making a significant economic savings contribution to the community as well as providing high-visibility crime prevention patrols. The Turlock Police Department has established the VIPS 2080 Club to properly honor and reward the dedication of these individuals. Roger Luzzi, Shirley Barton, Al Opdyke, Bob Brazil, Bill Stapleton, and Ted Runner proudly wear the 2080 Club patch on their uniform jackets. The Department congratulates them and thanks them for their dedication to the Turlock Police Department VIPS Program.
