Protecting Water Quality in the San Joaquin River and Its Watershed

The City of Turlock is a member of the East San Joaquin Water Quality Framework, which includes the Modesto, Turlock, Oakdale, Merced and South San Joaquin irrigation districts, as well as other area cities and stakeholders. The Framework has a Web site at www.sjwatershed.org.

The web site provides information on the San Joaquin River and its watershed; steps that residents, businesses and growers can take to help protect water quality in the river; and information about the Framework. In addition, there are links to dozens of sites that provide more detail on topics such as storm water best management practices for farming, business and industry; resources for teachers; water quality coalition contacts; and household hazardous waste collection days throughout the Framework areas.

The goals of the Framework are to support compliance with the Irrigation Lands Program (Conditional Ag Waiver); collect and analyze surface water quality data in the area; work to begin to differentiate among sources of water pollution; and to study the effectiveness of various management practices and controls in the area.

The Framework is currently funded with a grant from the State Water Resources Control Board’s Consolidated Grants Program. The ongoing maintenance of the site will be provided by the Modesto Irrigation District.

Sandbags

As a service to citizens, the City of Turlock Municipal Services Department operates a sandbag pickup operation. Turlock residents can pickup sandbags for use during storm events to prevent damage and flooding on their property, however the City of Turlock does not deliver sandbags.

If flooding occurs on City streets, you may clean debris from the grating but please DO NOT remove storm grates or manhole covers, as doing so will create safety and security problems.

Sandbags can be picked up at 901 S. Walnut Road, Turlock. Sandbags may be picked up between the hours of 8:00AM and 4:00PM Monday through Friday. Hours may be extended and additional sand bag pickup locations may be added if demand is high.

There is no charge for the sandbags, but disposal becomes the responsibility of the citizen.

For more information on sandbag pickup, please call Municipal Services at 668-5590.
