Fire Services
Firefighter Training
Turlock City Fire and Emergency Services has a dedicated training division under the direction of a Chief Officer. It is the responsibility of the training division to research, develop, coordinate, schedule, and deliver training to all employees. It is the goal of the training division to provide our Firefighters with the knowledge, and abilities to safely and efficiently mitigate all emergencies. Turlock City Fire and Emergency Services is a participant in the
Joint Apprenticeship Committee Program, a state agency which certifies firefighters training and education, and a Pre-Hospital Continuing Education provider for our Department EMS program. We are in the process of Meeting NIMS mandates by providing IS 700 and IS 800 training.

There are two methods of training within our department, formal, and informal. Formal training is scheduled monthly by the training division and is delivered to all Firefighters. Much of this training is based on state or federal mandates. We also participate in training with Turlock businesses involving ammonia leaks, rescue team training, and large area search & rescue. Informal training usually occurs at the engine company level or multi-engine company level. We have developed quick drills, and performance standards for training at the engine company level. Much of the probationary Firefighter training occurs at the Engine Company level. There may be target hazards in specific districts that require engine company level awareness training. Much of the training is taught by our own instructors. Many of these instructors have developed an interest in a specific area, and they have participated in “Train the Trainer” classes and developed a technical expertise. We are fortunate to have quality people who like to share their knowledge and expertise with our department, and sometimes with other departments.

The mission statement for the Fire Academy is:
To educate, train, and inspire the Fire Fighter Academy members so that each graduate will be ready for service on an engine company and committed to the values of Duty, Honor, and Public Service. These are lifelong values that we hope the firefighters will develop throughout their careers as a professional Firefighter for the City of Turlock.
The Turlock Fire Department Fire Academy is an important first step in the careers of our new Firefighters. We have a 5 week academy where new recruits are taught the fundamentals in all aspects of firefighting emergencies and daily life as a Firefighter to prepare them for their new careers. This training includes comprehensive manipulative and didactic training.
We have two kinds of probationary training. The first type is for the firefighters who have come out of the fire academy, and are about to begin their careers. Their training involves both formal and informal training on a daily basis. In addition to the daily training there are probationary tests held at the 4, 7, and 10 month benchmarks of their first year. The second type of probationary training is held for our Captains and Battalion Chiefs. This is formal monthly training working from a study book to enhance our candidate’s supervisory skills.
