Occupancy Inspections

When is an occupancy inspection required?

Occupancy inspections occur when a commercial business moves into a new location or whenever there is a change in the ownership of a commercial business.

What is the purpose of an occupancy inspection?

An occupancy inspection is a safety inspection of occupied commercial space. The purpose is to insure the safety of yourself, your employees and your customers.

How should I prepare for an occupancy inspection?

No preparation is necessary for the inspection. Please move into and start up your business so that it is fully operating in the manner you are anticipating to function.

What would the inspectors be looking at or for?

The inspectors will be reviewing occupied space for hazards and the maintenance of facilities in proper working condition related to the following areas:
  • Electrical systems
  • Plumbing systems, including hot water heater lines, drains and strapping
  • Exit doors, signage, lighting and pathways
  • Proper installation of racking and shelving
  • All newly installed service counters comply with California accessibility requirements
  • Any unpermitted work

To schedule an inspection, please call 668-5542, ext. 2223 by 4 pm on the business day prior to your inspection request.

We will make every effort to perform your inspection within the next business day. Be sure to have your building permit number, address, & inspection type readily available.
